Reflection on the Seven Hermetic Principles

The Kybalion outlines seven principles that have become a cornerstone of my personal philosophy. They are not merely ancient dogmas; they are practical tools for navigating the complexity of a modern life, particularly from my vantage point as a developer in Nigeria.

The Principle of Mentalism reminds me that everything begins in the mind. The code I write, the systems I build, and the reality I experience are all products of thought. My focus is on refining my internal mental model to better align with the world.

The Principle of Correspondence—"as above, so below"—is particularly resonant in software. Just as the patterns of the universe repeat at different scales, the design of a small function often mirrors the architecture of a global system. I find beauty in this fractal nature of existence.

The Principle of Vibration keeps me aware of the energy I bring to my projects. If I approach my work with frustration, the output reflects that dissonance. I aim for a steady, focused vibration, allowing clarity to guide my technical decisions.

The Principle of Polarity is my safeguard against extremes. Whether it is success and failure, or productivity and rest, I recognize that these are simply two sides of the same coin. I learn to embrace both as necessary parts of the journey.

The Principle of Rhythm helps me understand the ebbs and flows of progress. There are times for rapid deployment and times for silent reflection. Fighting these natural rhythms is counterproductive; accepting them is liberating.

The Principle of Cause and Effect teaches accountability. Every bug I encounter is a lesson in causation. By understanding the underlying variables, I gain control over my own outcomes.

Finally, the Principle of Gender reminds me that creation requires both logic and intuition. Coding is the masculine act of structure, while the vision behind it is the feminine act of conception. Both must be balanced to create anything of lasting value.

These principles do not provide easy answers, but they provide a framework for enduring questions. They anchor me when the world seems chaotic and remind me that I have agency in shaping my own reality.
